Hi, I've got a 14' Chevy Cadet with an 8 inch gash in the keel line just below the waterline. I have a fibreglass repair kit and am not so worried about how it will look (as its below the waterline) but the thing that confuses me is that there seems to be 1/2 inch gap in between the fibreglass and the actual floatation in the boat. Should I use a filler here? If so what kind?

For anyone that can help me, I have very detailed digital pics I can email you right away so you can understand the situation better.

Thanks so much guys, this is an amazing site...

I had a big nasty ol' gash like that. I ground out all the old exposed fiberglass threading, and created an outward dish extending 2 inches all the way around. I didn't have access to the wound from behind, so I mixed up some 2 part epoxy, and thickened it to the consistency of peanut butter with filler intended for epoxy, and filled the gash with plenty, forcing it in. Once cured, I ground and sanded to remove the blush, and used 4 layers of cloth saturated with epoxy. Each layer is a little biggert than the last, filling out the dished area. I sanded it smooth and havn't looked back. You are not concerned with appearance, so you don't have to worry about the fact that gelcoat doesn't bond to epoxy all that well. Remember, everything must be clean, wipe down liberally with acetone. Good luck...
