How do I replace the waterpump impeller in a 1967 35 Hp Sea King outboard motor?

I need to examine the water pump impeller in this old Sea King, but I don"t know how to remove the lower unit to get to it. After taking the bolts out, the unit only drops about an inch and won"t come completely off. A friend thought that moving the shifter will let it drop off but no luck with that. Any suggestions?

You're on the right track, after un doing the four main lower leg unit bolts, the leg will drop about an inch or so (as you stated) and there should be 1 or 2 screws inside the unit (should be obvious to see) un-do them and the whole thing should just slide right out...

Those screws may be behind a cover on the leg, if so remove the lower one.
