Re: How do I seperate the very bottom of the lower case. 1965 Evinrude 90hp
I believe that your lower unit is exactly the same as mine (in signature). I assume that you don't have the Factory Service Manual (FSM). You should definitely get the FSM for your motor. It'll take uncertainty out of tasks such as the one you've just undertaken. It's really a bad thing to be heating and pounding when you're not even sure if that is what needs to be done. In this case, it worked well for ya, but it might not work so well next time. Just my opinion though. FSMs can be found on ebay or at outboardbooks.com.
I don't have my manuals with me, but I believe that OMC recommended Sealer 1000 for the seal. Since the Sealer 1000 is no longer manufactured, go with Scotchweld 847. It sets up fast so be sure that everything is clean and ready to go before slathering it on. Many places sell it including Fastenal. If they don't have it in stock, they can order it. I'm sure because that's where I got mine. You also need to apply sealer under the stud nuts and at the hole where the shift wires pass through. Use new stud locknuts. Also make sure that the wires are not pinched or have any bare spots. All of these steps are in the FSM. I hope that I'm not forgetting anything. If I remember something else, I'll let you know. Perhaps I listed some things that relate to your current task on my rebuild page.
