I hear things about ethanol gumming up engines over a long period of no use. I will start my old 1955 johnson next spring, but do i need to do anything before i store it away. I have heard of sta-bil, how do i use it? is there any other options before i store it?

Store it vertical to get all of the water out- - and follow the directions for the sta-bil.

not such a good idea to pull the fuel line and run it out of gas, you basically create a "lean" situation in the motor, causing unessesary wear and tear internally. use the marine stabil, fog it, and store it as mentioned, it might take a few pulls to get running in the spring, but well worth it.

You didn't say whether its a 3HP with an integral tank, or a 30 HP with a remote tank. The answers will be different.

First and foremost, don't listen to what you've heard. Go to any OB mfgs website and do what they say. They are the experts!

If its the former, get it running and hot, then shut it off and tip up the engine to drain the gas into a container. Then transfer it to your car. Start it back up and let it run till it stumbles, then twittle the choke til it basically runs out of gas. Fog it and you're done.

If its the latter, Stabil the gas in the tank, then start it up for a few minutes, pull the gas line and repeat the stumble choke thing. Done! Optionally, drain the tank first and go back to plan A.

Overblown fears for sure. Ever tear down a 2-stroke and see all the oily mess inside? Run a half gallon of straight gas thru her and watch her seize because all the oil was burned off. But run her dry for a few seconds and the internals will still be quite lubricated.

Grandpa told me to run her dry after EVERY outing. He was never wrong. After 45+ years of doing that 100% of the time I've never had to rebuild a powerhead yet.

it's a 5.5hp, with the pressurized 2 line tank

......run it lean for a day and see the end result, even a few minutes lean cant be good, especially if you can avoid it. thats what fuel stabilizers are made for. just my thoughts.

Re: How do i store away my motor

So today i ran the motor for 5 minutes using gas/oil mixed with the regular sta-bil, i left gas in the motor, then i fogged the engine by spraying sea foam into the 2 spark plug holes and turning the motor over a couple times and repeated once. Did I do it right? Now for the the lower unit, it seems as though my prop shaft seal made by sierra but replaces original 303345, my seal was too tight on the shaft and was spinning when i was running the motor on my fishing trip. The green paint around the seal was worn, that's how i could tell it was spinning, it was also out of place explaining why it leaking lower unit oil. Am i better to get another seal from sierra 18-2022 or try to find the OMC 303345? Thanks

sea foam will remove the critical oils needed for storage! you need to use fogging oil, follow the instructions on the can.

But it says on the can for fogging 2 and 4 stroke motors, and has the instructions on the can on how to fog the motor. This is the ordinary sea foam not the deep creep.

if it has instruction for fogging, and you followed them, it should be good to go into storage.

exactly, but i can't remember if it said to spray into air intake while motor is running, I only sprayed into the spark plug holes when it was shut off. I still need to straighten out the prop shaft oil seal situation, is it normal for it to spin while prop is turning, or is it suppose to remain stationary

Re: How do i store away my motor

i normally fog directly into the intake, with motor running, and try to keep it running , cuz it will want to stall. but follow the directions for the product you use.
i dont think any part of the seal for the gearcase should spin, (i have never changed one) hopefully someone that knows more will chime in.
