Hi,

I'm parting out a '63 18hp Evinrude Fastwin, and I'm trying to remove the flywheel. There is a large nut, right in the center of it. I cannot stop the flywheel from turning to take this off. How do I take this flywheel off, preferably without buying any specialized tools (I have a large selection of tools, but not a flywheel puller).

You're going to need a harmonic balance puller, here in the U.S. you can get them for about $10 at almost any auto parts store. (They aren't the best quality but they will get the job done.)

If you look in the top secret files there is more detailed info about using the tool.

You need a puller and some time if it is on really tight. Search pulling a flywheel and you will find everything you need and also check out the top secret files at the top of page 1 of this section.

To get that big nut off there I use a rattle gun, same as for the crank in a car. Getting it torqued back on is the hard part. You may have to jam the starter ring.

Or you can use a flywheel holding tool to hold the flywheel to take the nut off.

HI pc. Need old motor you've got there. You'll definitely need an flywheel puller along with (3) Grade 8 1/4'' x 20 x 3'' bolts and washers to use with it as the stock bolts are not strong enough. You should be able to find a puller at any auto store for about $15 and the bolts can be had at a Lowes/HD or almost any other decent hardware store. Don't be surprised if the flywheel is stubborn, just be patient. It will come off. Here are some links that can walk you through a tune up from top to bottom.

just remove a spark plug and pill up a cylinder with some small cotton rope until the piston can't complete it's stroke. I've used this method to remove and re-torque my 115HP Johnson to 80ft/lb a few times.

That work's but be shure to not let the line get into one of the intake/exhaust ports. It'll cut the line off,and it'll be stuck down inside where you can't find it without splitting the case.

Done - flywheel off - thanks for all the advice guys.

Now the next question - how do I get the ignition plate off?

He's not rebuilding, he's dismantling for parts.

Oh, in that case just remove the screws that hold the coils in place and the armature plate should lift right off.

Re: How do I take a flywheel off

Thanks - that was easy - for anyone else doing the same thing - you have to take out four screws, and on the 1963 and 1964 18hp Evinrude Fastwin, the four phillips head screws are the ones you have to remove. All the other screws are flathead screws.

Also - just wanted to pass on my thanks to everyone who has been viewing and posting here. I originally bought three motors, two of which I couldn't use, and couldn't sell locally. I was able to part them out with the advice from this forum - and have now sold many of the parts on ebay. It was a bit sad, pulling apart these motors, particularly the one that was still mostly good - but now a whole bunch of other 60s Evinrudes and Johnsons are running....thanks to the help from this forum. One guy commented that he had been looking for a part (unavailable new) for quite some time.

Thanks for being an outboard organ donor. As you said, many other motors are now up and running so it was well worth it. Plus, the $ can help pay for the fix on the current motor. However, be warned wheelin' and dealin' old boat motors is highly addictive and awesome :)
