How do I tell if my VRO is working?

1990 90hp Johnson. Let me give a little history here...I bought the motor used and had to buy the controls seperately. I have also bought a tach with the warning lights in it...but not sure if the necessary sensors are on the motor to activate these lights. I have ordered a Seloc manual and hopefully it will answer some of these question....but until it arrives maybe you guys can help.....I have no idea if the VRO pump is working...how do I tell? Also there is a pair of wires coming from the oil tank that I think is a sensor for low oil...but don't know where to connect them...
Does this motor have any type of sensor on the VRO pump itself to warn if it stops pumping?
The controls I bought are OMC and have what looks like a buzzer in the harness but I have no idea if it is wired properly....
Thanks

There might be a technical way to verify, but I like the simple method.

Run 50:1 premix and start with a full oil container. After use, measure the fuel used and the oil used and see if your in the 50:1 range.

Might smoke a little more, if its burning 2 times the oil, but it won't hurt anything.

FishHog

If this will not hurt anything...why not just add oil to all the gas..then if the VRO pump gives out...you will not sieze the engine?

One 5 gallon run won't hurt. A season at 25:1 will cause excessive fouling of plugs and carbon build up in the combustion chamber. 5 gallons @ 50:1 should use 13 oz of oil.

Well, you can tell if it's still hooked up by just looking at the pump and seeing if the oil lines are still connected to the motor or if they have been plugged off at the VRO, if they are still connected, then I would run 50:1 fuel and check to see if the VRO is working, if they are pluged off at the VRO, then you have your answer and you know you better start mixing your fuel or replace the pump.

I suprised the experts haven't jumped in and told you how the book says to test it.

I have a 1995 60hp and my book gives the details on how to test it.

This is the shortened version.
Disconnect the oil line where it enters the motor housing. Connect a clear line to the nipple. Fill the clear line with oil. Hold the line in a vertical position and note the oil level, run the motor (using premix). Listen for the VRO air motor, after a few VRO cycles note to see how far the oil has dropped.

My VRO has an alarm system on it to detect no oil flow. It is a 4 wire system coming out of the back of the VRO.

Here is a link to some pictures I am using for another post. The last picture shows a little of the alarm system on the back of the VRO
VRO pics

Thanks Zantz....that was exactly the kind of information I was looking for.....and yes mmcpeck, the VRO pump is still connected....so now I have to test. There are some wires going to it...I hope it is for an alarm of some type...but won't know till I get a wiring diagram...which I hope is in the Seloc Manual I ordered.
