I have a 1973 65HP Johnson i'm trying to test. I bought it with a 1979 Gypsy Regal and the 9.9 Evinrude it came with for a little under 1k and i need to know exactly what im working with.

The old owner said he got it to fire up just fine, and the only thing i can visibly see wrong with it is that the mounts were cut to remove the motor.

I cant seem to get it to crank start and am looking for the next step. I'm extremely new to this stuff and have already ordered the manual for repair but i'm starting to get antsy!

Willy,
What do you mean by the "mounts being cut"??
When I get a new one, I like to first do a compression test, then a spark test. That's what I'd do if I were you. If both of those look good, you might want to try to hook up the fuel to it with a water supply for the water pump in place and see if she'll crank. You need to prime it with the primer bulb on the fuel line until it gets hard, then push the choke button and turn the key. (making sure it's in neutral). Don't try testing the spark without a $6 spark tester from autozone. I got my $20 compression tester from O'Reilly's and it works fine, too. If it does crank, watch the motor very closely to be sure it's pumping water.
Good luck and I hope you post your compression and spark test results,
JBJ
