I know that this is a stupid question, but I am trying to find out how to check to see if my kill switch is bad (no spark).

Is there an easy way to bypass this switch?

What motor? Most later model are normally open momentary switches and you can simply disconnect to bypass.

Unhook the red cannon plug and check for spark. If you now have spark, the problem lies from the plug forward. Kill switch, key switch or related wiring (black w/yellow stripe).

If you still have no spark with the plug undone, the problem is on the motor.

Post your results and we'll go from there.

Good luck!

Okay...what is the "red cannon plug" and where do I find it???

Is this the red fused line inside the motor housing?

Re: How Do You Check the Kill Switch?

One more question...the kill switch has a black wire from the ignition switch, a black/yellow wire from ignition switch, and a black/yellow wire to the engine. None of these wires are hot when tested with a testing light. I've even wired the two black/yellow wires together.

Comments, anyone?

The cannon plug is the big red connector for the main harness under the motor cover. Unplug it and check spark. If you try to start the motor and it does start, you will have no way to shut it off with that plug undone other than manually flooding it with the primer.

Before we go any further, describe how you are checking spark now.

Pulling off the spark plug wire and holding it near a ground while the engine is turning over.

But shouldn't one of the wires going from my starter swith to the kill switch be hot when the key is on?

the black/ yellow stripe wire is a signal wire to ground from the CDI unit; wont show any significant voltage

Re: How Do You Check the Kill Switch?

All the black and black/yellow wires are ground related wires. Remamber this is a magneto ignition not a battery ignition. You need nothing to turn it "on" but you need to ground it out to shut it off.
