How do you disconnect linkage at motor to get it passed through that rubber grommet?

Have a 1089 150 HP Johnson (Model Number J150STLCEM) and I want to take out linkages as I want to get new ones. One of them seems to be adjusted as "short" as it will go, and the motor will barely shift in to reverse. I see a thumb wheel on each cable, but not sure it that's where I separate them from the short section that is attached with a nut. They have to separate somewhaer so they can pass through that grommet. This grommet has two holes in it just big enought to pass each cable.

Also, what are the steps to get proper adjustment on these two cables?

Thr grommet should have a slice at each hole to fit the cables through. Lift the grommet out of the cover you should then see the slice to remove cable.
