how do you find year and model

i have a pontoon that was given to me by my wifes uncle. so far all i can tell is that it is a johnson 40 hp and looks like it was last registered in 91. how do you find year and model of motor . saw an excellent link here for parts( oh yeah no key so i need a new ign. sw. ) but i need more info, i.e J40TLCEC or jlr40clc or tj40elcec or j40rcec... where would i find this located on the engine so i can order parts? any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

looking from the back of the motor, right side of the transom mount. or a quarter size disc on the block.

Look closely at the face of the ignition switch for numbers, if you find them the keys are available. If you find a number I can give you the part number that it matches.

Depending on the age of the motor, you may find a 1" X 3" plate on the side of the transom bracket with your model number.
