How do you know if your lower shift cable needs replacing?

I was wondering if this is something I should add to the maintenance list. Right now it is not a problem, but the initial hump into forward and reverse feels very firm at the control. Once over the hump, it's quite smooth to just work the throttle.

What signs should I look for or how often is this replaced?

Mine is a '99 270 Sundancer with a B3 and always in freshwater.

Howdy,

Mercruiser Manual #11 has a troubleshooting section that refers to shifting problems.

For example:
Drive Unit Shifts Hard
NOTE: For additional information on troubleshooting, refer to Sec. 2A and see ?Trouble-
shooting Shift Problems.? ..........Cause Shift cables improperly adjusted.
Damaged remote control or drive unit shift cable.

Shift cable too short (sharp bends) or too long (loops and long bends).

Corroded shift cables.........Internal wear in remote control box.
Shift cable attaching nuts too tight (end cannot pivot).
Shift cable pivot ends are corroded, or not lubricated.
Remedy Adjust shift cables.
Replace cable(s) and adjust.
Select and install proper length cable.
Replace, adjust, and check for water leakage.
Clean and lubricate.

etc. etc.etc

You'll find a lot of good info in the correct Mercruiser service manual for your model
Mine is a 1997 model and the correct manual for it is #11 You would need to locate your serial number(s) and determine the correct manual for your drive. They're not all that expensive, and even if you don't want (or are unable) to work on your own engine/drive, it's helpful to fully informed if you take it someplace to have it worked on. You can be ready to converse with the shop with all the right info.

Regards,

Rick
