I need to lock my trailer which do you reccomend? Something that goes over the tongue or a thick chain and lock around one of the rims?

Hole in trailer coupler? Put a lock thru it.
Have a vehicle you can park in front of it?
Chain it to the vehicle.
Run a chain thru wheel and around frame.

At home I don't lock it, but it's kept in a locked barn and the FIL is always around. "Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.":D

At the ramp, I back into the stall with the trailer wheels against the curb. I also have a padlock through the coupler so it can't be unhooked from the truck and I run a plastic coated cable and padlock thru the wheel and around the frame when we are going to be out overnight.

Just remember that a determined thief will get it if he puts enough effort into it. The goal is to make your trailer more difficult to steal than the one parked next to you.

TD - Just so you know, With a 9/16" socket I can loosen the coupler clamp, drop it on my vehicle, tighten it up and drive away with your trailer.

Other ways are to remove a trailer wheel, fabricate something with a trailer ball that if the latch is locked you cannot unbolt it, or chain it to a tree.

I lock mine in my garage - don't have a problem there ;) . Just lock the coupler. If you are boating in a high crime area where you have to do more than that, my suggestion is to find another place to boat!

I have a SS ball and plate that fits where the tow ball would go. It then locks down onto the trailer hitch so nobody can attach a vehicl to it. I also have one of those locks that goes through to hold down release the trailer hitch. Realize that if someone really wants to take it they could flatbed out of your driveway in a few minutes and worry about the locks later. Best protection is to park something in front of it and if possible, make sure the neighbors know that no one is scheduled to remove your boat from the area.

For that, I would go with a coupler lock...

and a wheel lock. Either chain/cable with a padlock, or....

Re: How do you lock your trailers?

I have an old U shaped lock that was used on a Bicycle. I ran it through the rim and around the frame. Kyrptonite is the brand I think. The coupler is also locked and I removed the pin for the swing away tongue.

The trailer (with boat on it) is also parked in the backyard inside a locked privacy fence. The boat is not visible from the street. The only people that can see it are the neighbors behind me and beside me. If someone goes through all that to steal it I just give State Farm a call.........

Re: How do you lock your trailers?

the best would be to remove a wheel as tashasdaddy stated above but make sure you take the spare off the trailer...one of my neighbors stores his that way ,he removes both tires throws them on the side of the house ??? and leaves the one spare attached to the trailer??? i questioned him he now stores all three inside the shed/ 9.99 master lock on door....

Re: How do you lock your trailers?

I really need to improve my lock arrangement, most likely with one of those gizmoes with a ball in the coupler and a bar around the top and a chain set in a 4 foot deep concrete filled hole going around the trailer frame.

Beyond that, AR-15 at home, double stack 1911 when I'm out, and an XD-40 sub compact stashed in an unnamed spot on the boat in case of piracy ;)

Re: How do you lock your trailers?

I lock my couple in the open position. This way someone trying to steal the trailer (and boat) can not latch it to their towball. If you lock it in the closed position, like someone said earlier, a 9/16 socket on the clamp is as easy to use as a key in a lock.
