How do you measure control cables?

I need to order some new control cables. I measured the old ones from end to end and they came out to 12'. Is that the right way to do it?

from anchor point to anchor point.<br />and round up to the nearest ft

or look closely on the the original cables and the lenth is stamped.<br />someplace maybe

the length is sometimes stamped in inches so some math is involved getting it to a normal number.
