How do you properly set point gap?

I have recently purchased a 1981 Chrysler Sea King 15 hp. It does not run, so I decided to take the initiative and learn how to work on it. I firgured that I would start by purchasing an ingnition rebuild kit. Installing condensers, and the points seems rather simple, bolt on and wire up the way it came off. I have one problem though, I know the point gap should be .020, but how do you adjust it? I understand that you can use feeler gauges, but thats about it. Thanks in advance!

There will be 2 slots on the points. One round and one elongated. These are where the 2 screws go. Install the points but leave some play in the screws. Turn the crankshaft until the cam lines up with the rubbing block of the points. Put the feeler gauge between the contacts and tighten down the screws. Turn crank around a full turn and see if the gap is still .020. If not readjust till it stays at .020. You should also apply a very little grease to the cam. Not sure what to use these days.

Thanks! I really appreciate it! My new points came with some grease, so I'll use that. I was pretty sure that that was how to do it, but I wanted to do it right the first time and not screw anything up. Thanks again!

Jacob

Don't use too much grease otherwise the cam will throw it off onto the points and it acts as an insulator. Just a light, thin film on the cam will do it.
