How do you replace thermostat

Mercruiser 260 1983

I have the quicksilver kit there are a bunch of gaskets when I fill the block with anti freeze I pull the whole unit off (composed of 2 parts ) I usually use blue form a gasket stuff to "glue them both down" when prepping in the spring

so the question is do I need some sort of glue (quicksilver perfect seal ?)

and any other advise since I have never done this before

I put my thermostats on dry, no sealers or anything else. make sure the gasket surface is clean and flat, and it should work fine. I scrape mine clean with a razor blade, and if its not flat I carefully use a file to dress it until the surface is true again. I've only had to do the file trick once, and that was when I first got it to remove some previous person's pry marks on a gasket surface.
