Ok been drinking so forgive me if I missed the obvious but how do you rotate the motor? I mean I want to turn motor over with out a starter. The front of the crank is covered with the motor mount so I cant just put a socket on it like a car.

Tried putting it in gear and turning the prop with no luck.

Thanks

Ayuh,... Been sober 12 years now, You're forgiven....;)

Over-tighten the V-belt, pull the sparkplugs,+ turn it from the Alternator Nut....

Going to try it. Hope it gives some Tq. Problem leading to this it it wont turn over, sounds frozen. Put new starter on last year and it sounds like its smacking the flywheel but it wont turn over. Going to try now.

Thanks...I will report back.

I used the alternator nut but squeezed the belt a little tighter by hand.

Ayuh,.... 1st thing to do is Pull the Drive,... 6 or 8 nuts,+ it's Off....

Then you'll know whether it's a motor problem or drive problem...

Pullin' the sparkplugs is the 2nd thing to do....

Well good news and bad. Turned over with plugs out on the alt no problem. Good!

The nice shinny new EBAY starter I bought last year seems to suck! After a hammering it turns over about 50% of the time when the key is switched. So whats the deal with these starters I use the boat maybe 12 times a year and I replace or rebuild the starter once a year. I currently have 3 "cores" here. This was the 1st ebay one and it died in a year like the OEM ones.

Any way here the bad, after it started (1st time this year) I left it running on earmuffs for 15 minutes or so and at idle I suddenly hear this grinding noise near the transom? It did not affect the idle. I shut it down and looked and saw nothing than stated it back up and same noise. Strange? I was not loud but I definitely heard the noise suddenly start.

Made no difference if it was in gear or not.

Help? what could it be?

Re: How do you rotate the motor?

The noise may be coming from the gimbal bearing. When was the last time the drive was off and the bellows checked for water, alignment checked, gimbal bearing checked and lubed, ujoints checked and lubed, etc. ?

Re: How do you rotate the motor?

Well after some seachering that gimbel bearing is what I came up wit too. I tried turning the motor from side to side and I was glad to not hear any change in the noise. I shut it down and lubed all grease fittings (one inside I outside and two on trim). Seems that the noise has gone away. Good? Or should I be expecting future problems?

I looked into that bearing job....wow $2300 in specilized tools to do the job! Wow.
