Recently pulled the lower stern drive from upper on my 1967 mercruiser 80 and when I reconnected the two, prop remains in gear regardless of shift shaft position. I was told that I needed to pull lower back off and put shift shaft in lower in neutral and boat shifter in netral and then reconect. This seems simple enough but how can I tell when shift shaft is in neutral? The shaft moves with a set of clamps on it and I can feel it shift when I move it but Prop contiunes to move main dive shaft. Do I have additional problem now or is it supposed to do this? I read in repair book to turn shaft clockwise until it got hard to turn and this forward gear but not sure. Help???

sounds like yer both R&Ring the lower with the drive still attached to the boat. that's ok. still. ya need to be in fwd when reassembling. least it's easiest that way. put the remote in fwd. put the lower in fwd. fwd. on the lower can be achieved by turning the shift shaft till it stops and the prop locks ccw. then reassemble..... keeping the lower in fwd. is tricky as it tends to want to go into neu. to help keep it in fwd. use a bungee on the prop after ya got it in fwd. and put a load on it with the bungee to help keep it in fwd. during the assembly process.....
