Well, I finally hit the water with the used boat I just got. Kids were putting on the skis and went to start it and the push button throttle control that gives you throttle without being in gear was stuck in. Man if it isn't one thing its another. Family was bummed, but thats part of buying used. This is on a 1999 starcraft with 4.3 merc. Does anybody know what would cause this and how you take it apart.

Re: How do you take apart the advanced throttle control with the little round push bu

Okay I pulled the handle off and see a little black plactic part inside the looks like a quartered pie with a little stub coming up towards me. I wiggled it, pulled a little with a needle nose with no luck. It is stuck inward and won't pop out. The motor won't start or anything with it stuck in. I don't know if I dare pull any of the bolts out to maybe get a look at the back of the assembly because I don't know if they are holding anything. Any ideas?

If it's a Merc Commander 3000/4000 you will need to push throttle handle forward (full speed) to remove the broken shaft of the round throttle only button.

Thanks for the reply. I did some reading last night and I think I am stuck in drive. That button I think is supposed to be out when in drive so I am not sure what is going on. The prop spins clockwise, but won't spin counterclockwise. Is there a way to adjust it out of drive?

The way to remove the "throttle only" button on older Commander shifters is to press the button in and hold it, and move the lever to full reverse...then the button just pops out. That is the ONLY way of removing it without breaking it...

Current Merc side mounts are just the opposite, full fwd with the button pushed in...

Mine just popped out when I grabbed it so I don't know what happened. I couldn't get mine in reverse because my botton was locked in advanced throttle control. It wasn't broke, but I don't know if the button with shaft just sits against the inners or is it supposed to be locked into something?
