How do you test a transducer?

I have a Sitex CRT color sounder that is acting up and I’m wondering if there may be a problem with the transducer. (Transducer is through hull mounted) I originally thought that it might have a picture tube or something that is going bad? I still haven’t ruled this out and may end up sending to Sitex to check it out but wanted to rule out the transducer before doing so. The display looks like a television with the horizontal hold out of whack. I hooked it up this weekend to troubleshoot and it worked fine for 10 min. or so then went haywire. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong? Can you offer any insight on how to test the transducer and cable?

Thanks
muddog

Your best bet is to send it back to SiTex. Make sure you send the transducer also. (I know its a pain to remove). Dont know how old your unit is and Im thinking its a CVS-106. If so their are some software updates if your unit is more than four years old.

Re: How do you test a transducer?

I bought the boat used and am not sure when the sounder was added. The boat is a '93 and I would guess that it was installed then or shortly after (but don't know for sure). You've got a good point on the transducer and you're right that would be a pain considering it's a through hull.

Thanks for the reply
