How do you use a timing light???

Hi, i know how to set it up i.e cylinder 1,and the red and black wires but, I really don't know anything more about it.. I hook it up and i see a light flashing and it becomes steady when i rev the engine but what how do i use it specifically.. I see my timing marks on the flywheel but what am i looking for or do????

ok<br /> I have a cat asleep on my lap, excuse typo's<br /> what that strobe does is pick up a firing impulse from a plug wire and flashes the lamp.<br /> the flash indicates spark occured.<br /> the entire purpose of timing is to insure it occurs when the piston is in the correct position for the RPM.<br />first thing to check is do the reference marks agree with the physicall position of the piston/. in other words when the piston is at TDC do the marks agree?<br /> by your description its rather obivious your clueless as whats going on. we can aid in clueing ya in.<br /> however we need a seriel number and ign type.<br />do you have a service manual?<br /> and why are we messing with timing ?

75 merc 500 50hp I"ve changed the following on it <br />New Fuel pump<br />Rebuild Carbs<br />changed switchbox/distribtor<br />New fuel line to in between carbs<br />Compression good<br />Engine revs fine in tub but when in ocean only goes 5mph?? I have a Shop manual thanks for all your help..any suggestions

man i hope we find a way to fix all these mercs that seam to have the same trouble. manual 40$/ stator 190$ / daughter& granddaughter.who knows how much$/ offering to just pull her 85yr mod. behind my 68 BEARCAT for the rest of the yr. PRICELESS good luck to all
