How does power steering work.

I have a Alpha one with a merc engine in it. The Steering is frozen and I am trying to understand how the power assisted steering works. Can I bypass the power steering?

Assist via engine mounted pump. You can maybe disconnect the belt to the pump but she will be very hard to steer. Might want to find the problem and fix it.

if the steering is frozen how do you know the power steering system is at fault??

Doubt its the power steering system causing it. More that likely the steering cable.
