How does power trim work?

I am in the process of replacing the rusted out motor on the trim unit for my Evinrude 1984 115 TLCRD motor. There are two wires that go to the motor and two separate wires going to a toggle type switch in the same area as the motor. It comes from and goes back to the area of the relays for the trim unit. What is the function of this switch? How does it fit into the trim tilt operation. Just trying to understand what happens when I operate the up down switch on my shift arm.

That " toggle switch " is simply a sending unit for a guage at the helm.----Tells the operator what position the motor is in without having to look back at the motor .----That switch has nothing to do with operating the trim motor.

I don't have a trim gauge, so I can just eliminate this wire. Is that correct?
