How does the Gen charge the battery?

I am wiring a 63 evenrude electric shift and have everthing set up. I hope. But I am wondering about the wiring to charge the battery. I have a blue wire that goes from the generator to the field post on the voltage regulator. Then a small red wire from the bat terminal on the VR --- I forget where that small red wire goes????

Then there is a heavy red wire from the bat terminal on the VR and because I don't have an amp meter hooked up the heavy red wire is hooked to nothing.

Pretty confuding:confused: How can I hook the wiring so I know the battery is being charged?

The large red wire doing nothing is supposed to be connected to the same large terminal on the starter solenoid that comes from the POS post on the battery. Current on the battery cable is two way. When you crank the engine current flows to the engine and starter from the battery. When the engine is running, the generator feeds the charging current to the battery via the large battery cable. You install a voltmeter rather than an ammeter to verify charging. It can be connected anywhere that +12 volts and ground are available when the key is on.

Ah Ha!:p That heavy red wire goes through the cable from the control box to the ignition area. A heavy green wire comes from the pos side of the solenoid to the key. Should I attach that red cable to the same post as the green wire on the key? Or should it go directly from the batt terminal on the VR to the Pos side of the solenoid leading to the battery?
