I have a 1975 Johnson 9.9.

It needs some tweaking, but I have found that as soon as I take off the cover it runs better.

I want to check to make sure that the air into the engine area is not being blocked, but how does it get into there?

Thanks,

Randy

If it runs better w/ the cover off, look for an exhaust leak (usually a gasket failure). Run motor w/ cover off and feel for the leak.

To track down an exhaust leak. Get out the old siphon hose and hold one end to your ear and probe the suspected area with the other. It will sound off when you find it.
