okay maybe im going at this wrong i only let my 1984 v4 90 hp evinrude motor run for about 20 to 30 seconds then i shut the motor down because i don't see any water coming out the pee holes. on my motor the water comes through the heads into the thermostat housing then to the pee holes can any one tell me how that theory works is it like a car and when the water gets to a certain temperature the thermostats would open and let the water through or should they be open all the time. i am used of the engines were the water comes through the pee holes all the time and also my motor is on a stand so do i have a alarm for over heat on the engine it self or would that be on the boat the motor came off. i know the water is coming through the heads because when i take the 2 hoses off coming from the heads to the thermostat housing the water comes out with a lot of pressure be hind it thanks

If you have a good impeller, the telltale should be working as soon as the block starts to fill with water, regardless of the condition of the thermostats. If you have water to the two hoses which feed the thermostat housing, you should have a telltale. If not, it may be plugged. The water pump will provide sool water to the powerhead. If the thermostats are not functioning, (stuck shut) the warmed water cannot excape the block at idle and you will get an overheat. You need to pull the thermostat housing apart and check the stats, or replace them. When on plane, the pressure relief valves in the thermostat housing will open, flooding the powerhead with extra cooling water. The powerhead temps will actually come down when planing due to their opening. Also, there is a small hole (or pair of holes) in the thermostat valve body. make sure these twin pin holes (or single oval hole-depending on year) are open and not plugged. If this/these holes plug, you will get an overheat at idle.
