Where might water enter the gear lube if the boat has only been run on muffs? i just replaced the bellows, put the outdrive back on and ran it on the muffs. Checked dipstick and lube has foam on the top of it. level isn't higher so maybe it isn't water, but if it is, where can it come from? is there a seal in the water pump/impellor area that needs to be checked? omc 2.3l 1988.

there is a seal behind the pump pressure plate. sometimes gets corrroded around the housing. the water pressure goes through the seal is the shaft is worn at all. was there water in it before? if so there might have been a little left over. and thats what your seeing on the dipstick. after foaming up the oil.

Are you sure you seen water foam and not air foam? If you ran the engine on muffs and checked it immediatly you are probably just seeing air.
Let it set for a while and recheck. If you want to check for water, drain some gear lube out the bottom drain screw.

thanks. I'm not sure if it's air so I'll drain some out of the bottom and check it. It's not left over because I drained the drive for several days before I re-installed and re-filled it.

lilmandavis, does the seal you're refering to come with the impellor kit? If not, is it accessable from there or does it have to be replaced from inside the gear housing?
