Re: How easy is it to replace the impeller

If you are not mechanicaly inclined take it to a shop.

If you know your way around some tools and have good common sence give it a try.

You will be removing the lower unit.
Removing the pump housing.
removing impellar.
replace in reverse order.

Sounds easy rite?

Its a little more challenging that just that, but not that bad of a job. Look up threads on impellar replacement. There is some good advice out there.

Re: How easy is it to replace the impeller

I just replaced mine and I just started learning about fixing boats. It was really easy, but I have a manual. I really believe in manuals. I have them for all my cars and now the boat. Order an impeller kit and a manual and have a go. It was really easy for me. In fact I thought it was too easy and figured I must have messed it up. I think it is one of those jobs that keep boat shops in business. The parts are way cheap and it is too easy not to do it yourself.

I just ordered the Seloc Manual, big mistake, especially when you have a 40 year old engine, oh well, I am mechanically inclined, so I guess I'll just start figuring out which bolts to tak off.

Look at oldmercs.com and maxrules.com. They have lots of info, including old manuals.

Changing the impeller is easy(ish). The part that gets most people is aligning the shifting mechanism during re-assembly.

I know nothing about any kind of engine much less a marine motor. I purchased a little bass boat and called the Marina about changing the impeller. $120 and 3 weeks.

I went to the library, found the manual purchased the part for < $20, bought a 12 pack and enlised my neighbor to help me. Changed it with minimal issues.

Put another $10 into buying a little hand pump to replace the lower unit oil.

That's my problem, I forgot the 12 pack, so it sounds easy, I'll try it this weekend. Still waiting on a solenoid anyway. Thanks
