We are really lucky where we live. I have 3 nice lakes within 10 min of my house and a couple more an hour away. We have Ft loudon, Tellico and Melton Hill. Watts Bar and Norris also. I think it must be a pain to drive several hours to get to a lake and wonder how far I would traver to have a boat. How close or far away are the lakes you guys go to and what would be your limit?

Our lake is 11 miles away. We can hit Coeur d'Alene in about an hour. The only time I would go farther is for a 3 day or more trip.

If I was going to travel an hour or more to use a boat, then I would definitely want it to be docked at the lake. We're about 10 minutes to the local ramp. My folks lake place is 90 minutes and I can't imagine trailering all the way out there very often for a day trip.

1 mile from the Marina on the Mississippi (where I keep her) and 200 miles to Lake Superior. I boat both, and probably spend equal hours at each location.
However when I boat 200 miles away, I usually spend a long weekend or a full week and rent a slip.

Lake Erie and the Niagara River are 10 minutes away. Lake Ontario is about 30 minutes away. All the ramps are pristine with little traffic or waiting times.

That's why I live where I do. If it was any further than that I'd move. When my company relocated to northfreakincarolina and offered me a huge promotion and a 6 figure bonus I chose unemplyment rather than have to drive hours to a mediocre launching ramp.

Five ramps within 30 minutes from my house. All in the Kanawha River. Have trailered farther but only a few times and those were camping trips or vacation rental homes.

Seven hours from my house to the cabin. Mind you, it's a pretty nice lake to stay at for a fair time.

Living in north Iowa is a boaters heaven. I have a pretty nice walleye lake 10 minutes away. The mighty Mississippi is 2 hours away. 20 minutes to the north we have our choice of 10,000 lakes. Now if we could just get it to warm up and melt the ice.

Lake Erie is 11 miles and 25 minutes away. Towing an 18' Bowrider.
I am willing to launch the boat after work on weekdays and get in a few hours, and watch the sunset on the water. Back in the driveway and covered up by 11pm.

If the lake is too rough, there are a couple of inland lake options that are 60-120 minutes away.
I will only do the long trips on the weekends, and only if on the road before noon.
If I have to spend 4 hour Driving, Launching ,Recovering and Driving, it will need to be at least a 10 hour day.

How far you are willing to go depends on if staying overnight is in the plans or you intend to be back at home that night. Where are you located? Size of Boat?

I just went and measured- 110' and 12 steps down from the kitchen door to the dock gets me on a chain of 4 lakes with about 50-60 miles of boating. Or I can trailer up and be on The Georgian Bay in about 35 minutes. The only downfall- we get that "hard water syndrome" for about 5 months every year, which limits your boating to none.

I've got a 45 minute drive to saltwater, in the bay, about an hour to the ocean, and the nearest river is about 15 minutes from here.

I live in East Tn, none of the lakes freeze but it gets cold enough to be no fun. We have hundreds of miles of shoreline. The Tn River is big but too many big boats and rough water. Clinch is my favorite, you could go all the way to the ocean but we have our favorite stretch and the water is glass 9 out of 10 days.

My local fishing hole is 200 miles long x 30 miles at its widest point.

I follow migrating fish up and down its length. The truck gets 10 mpg, the boat 2 mpg. Drive anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours each way.

The big pond (Atlantic) is 2.5 hrs away. Rough day trip, 21 hour day, but I do it on a regular basis

Re: How far away is too far to own a boat.

It seems to me that if the shortest drive to launch is an hour or more, it's too far for day trailer boating. Maybe even less. Sure it can be done; anything can. But the root of the question is whether, with the drive, you will use the boat enough to make it worth it.

When you add the time to load all the stuff at home, deal with the launch from the time you enter the gate to the time you drive the boat away, reverse that, and put everything away at home (worse if you have to clean and cover) there's not much time at sea.

It also means you have to commit the full day to make it worthwhile. So that means you can't go on a Saturday if anyone has sports, home projects, commitments with others, etc. And not on Sunday, too if you go to church (I go atheist in the summer).

And woe unto you if you go on a Saturday and something happens and you don't get home in time to go to that thing at the in-laws. You are at high risk!

And if you are left with only full days, how many are there? If you live where it gets too cold in the fall and spring, you have about 14 weeks in the summer, which equals 28 days if you skip church. How many have commitments, how many rain? Doesn't leave much.

To me the best boating is the short hops. An hour cocktail cruise or just an excuse to run the boat. A half-day fishing trip. Take the children tubing for a couple hours. An hour at dawn before work; a short evening fishing trip under the bridges on a week night.

Re: How far away is too far to own a boat.

1hr 15min to Beaver
1hr 10min to Tenkiller
1hr 30min to Blue Mountain
2hr 15min to Ouachita
2hr 45mi to Greers Ferry
3hr to Bull Shoals

The first three are my day trip lakes but I'd spend a weekend camping at any of them.

Re: How far away is too far to own a boat.

we've got 4 miles to the river launch, newer ramps, VERY nice, then a mile in no wake to harbor, $5.00. Or 5 miles to harbor ramps, old, busy, but good and they are free.
There are more ramps/beaches than I can count within a half hour, depending on the boat/trailer. All are Lake Erie.

End of season I'll shop around and get a slip for a couple of months. Most people pull their boats week before/after Labor Day so 100 bucks will get you a nice slip for fall boating and a lot less traffic that time of year.
