how far back does mercury 25 hp 2 stroke go

I am purchasing a new 2005 merc 25hp 2 stroke. Does anyone know how long this motor has been around? I had a 15hp merc and it seemed that the model was completely compatible through the early nineties. Hence, how far back does the compatiblity of the 25 hp 2 stroke go, as far as hoods, props etc. and anything else.

The basic design of the 2-cylinder 24-cube looper goes back to about 1980. Lots of subtle changes through that run, though...<br /><br />- Scott
