How fast should my boat go?

I bought a new palm beach 205 whitecap. With the motor it weighs 2800 lbs. With 3 people and 40 gallons of fuel ( an extra 800 lbs - 3600 lbs total) it goes 27 knots (31 mph) full throttle (5800 rpm). At 4800 rpm it goes 20-21 knots (23 mph). It has a 140 hp suzuki outboard and a 18 pitch stainless prop. The hull deadrise is 21 degrees. Are these reasonable speeds or does this indicate poor setup?

I presume this is what you have.

You may be at your max. Where is your cavitation plate in reference to your bottom, Is that with full trim or can you trim to the max without porposing?

WOT = 31.548 mph if it is a deep V, 35.46 mph if it is flatter and quite optimized. You are fairly close to what you can expect.

it sounds a bit slow to me, but every boat/motor combination is different. i run a 20' center console with the same approx weight and a 150hp johnson. per gps, i run 42 mph at wot.

solittle asks the most important question. if these are not gps speeds, no one can help you.

I'm not sure what height the cavitation plate is at since I haven't had it out of the water yet - my trailer isn't ready. My speeds were all measured via GPS.

What is considered a deep V?

Re: How fast should my boat go?

boat speed calculator puts it at 35mph, with ZERO prop slippage and perfect water...31 seems about all youll really get with that motor

i have a 115hp on my 16 footer and can hit 60 on a good day

2800# is a good load for a 140.

Maximize your set up looking at engine height.
