Any idea how fast a 130 Sport model Boston Whaler 13' might go with a 25HP Johnson 2 stroke and a 300 pound load?

Re: How fast will it go?

I was not really looking for this setup but a deal that is too good to pass up came along. The hull is rated for a 40hp max, so I am not sure if the 25hp would be underpowered on this boat. I don't want to buy it and then need to repower.

It is a 1971 hull. According to Whaler catalogs from back in the day the hull only weighs 275 pounds, and is rated for 6 people or 1200 pounds capacity. Not sure where you would put 6 people on a 13 foot boat, but I really like the safety of the unsinkable hull.

At 25 hp your close to 2/3 of the rating.should work fine with the 300 lbs you mentioned.

ok, I didn't know it was rated for 40.........25hp on a boat that takes 40, my opinion, will feel underpowered. It'll plane, but not easily, and fall off plane too quickly. You'll have to cruise at WOT (the least fuel efficient throttle setting in planing mode) because backing off to 3/4 throttle (which would reduce fuel burn by half) will be displacement mode, even less efficient.

Understand, I'm speaking in general terms; I have no direct personal experience with this particular hull. I could be wrong.

I have seen a whole forum dedicated to Whalers, don't have the url handy, though.

Re: How fast will it go?

JTexas, thanks for that insight, which probably explains why the price is so low for this boat. If I have to repower that would get expensive. This boat is priced about $2k below others with 35hp and 40hp's on them (although those were also hulls that were 10 to 15 years newer). Maybe not such a good deal after all. Oh, and thanks for pointing out the fuel use, with the price where it is that is a consideration that I really had not thought about.

Re: How fast will it go?

I don't have the model or serial number but the owner said it is the motor that came with the boat new, so it should also be a 1971, or at least a 1970-1972. I forgot to get the hull SN and motor SN / model number but the current owner is out of town for the remainder of May. I do tend to believe what he is telling me as he is the original owner. I have some time, and right now depending on what happens with my transom replacement on my fiberglass lund and 18hp Johnson, that will determine what I do in regards to the Whaler. The 25 does have an electric start but no battery, so for now it would be pull start, no big deal to resolve. That and some new tires on the trailer due to sidewall cracking, is about all that is needed. The boat is at their cottage, and is in the garage except for when it gets used on some weekends. The owner is older now and does not really use it anymore, hence the sale.
