How fast with a 4.5 HP?

I have an 18ft aluminum Duracraft and my dad gave me a little 4.5 HP early 80's Evinrude outboard. Any idea if it's strong enough to push the boat? Estimated speed?

It has been sitting in his garage for twenty years but used to work fine. What do I need to do to get it ready for the water?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Probably about 3 - 4 mph.

I have a Johnson 6hp kicker on a 17.5' fiberglass trihull and get about 4 -5 mph, depending on the prop.

Welcome to iboats, ya, that is pretty big boat and a pretty small motor, it will cetainly get you around but don't get into a hurry.

That is good sized boat so maybe run that combo till you can find a 25-40 horse to put on it.

It will move you but "slowly" I would not like to get into any strong currents with it though.
Read up on "waking a sleeping outboard" before you use it.

Re: How fast with a 4.5 HP?

Thanks guys. I had an awesome 70HP Yamaha but somebody stole my boat and stripped it of everything of value. Got the boat back but insurance didn't give me enough to replace everything. Hence the old engine until I save up enough to get another 70. The 4.5 seems to be in good condition but the pull rope won't retract after you pull it. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

Thanks again
