compared to present day motors, how good does a well maintained and well tuned 25 sportster stack up? when new, this motor was extreemly high performence for it's day. just wondering how it would compare.

That engine was the 22 cubic inch engine that started as the 18hp in '57. It has a excellent power/weight ratio. Try and find any 25hp anywhere that weighs 83 lbs. Great engines. They do rev higher than the 18/20's though so don't skimp on the oil.

Yep, what sammo said. Good engines. pretty much anything is interchangeable with the 18's and 20's, except a few things. Yours is the first year made, so any of the 18's and 20's in that year, will have interchangeable parts. The pistons and heads won't work though and I believe the carb is bigger too.

The '69 doesn't have a $250 powerpack to go out. SO sadly, you'll have to spend much less if you have ignition troubles, plus you'll probably be able to get home on one cylinder if you have spark problems instead of getting to have a nice paddle back home in case the powerpack goes out on a newer motor. It has virtually the same type lower unit as motors today. The '69 isn't full of plastic so that stuff won't break, either. What Samott said.....
The powerheads never changed much, either, or the water pumps.
I'd love to have a '69 25hp, although I'd be tempted to put the powerhead onto a '57 18hp midsection just for fun.
