Thanks for your insight.

Cheaply built 20 year old boat with an outdrive made by a company that is no longer in business? What do you think?

wow...lol
I guess that I just keep picking on the cheap boats...lol

What is a good brand of boat to look at? What about power and leg? Should I be looking at outboard instead of i/o?

Whats the best value. I want to get a boat for skiing, and stuff with the family. It won't get a ton of use each summer, but instead only get used a bit. I want decent power, and I thought that the bowrider style was goor for family stuff, but I am not opposed to having a closed in front.

I want to try to keep my purchase below 5 grand....if possible....

Thanks for your help.....

Well, from one mildly crazy canuck to another here is something you might want to consider.
Log on to Washington State Craigslist and watch the boating section under Bellingham or particularly Seattle. You will see an awful lot of boats coming up on there for sale.
If you aren't interested in the enjoyable 3-4 trip thru the Peace Arch (border) and down the highway from Vancouver then at least use the prices as comparison leverage on local sales to try to get the price you want.
There is a lot of inventory out there right now in used boat and you are coming into the 'dream' season (and economy) for buying a used boat.
Don't jump too soon and do your homework. If you do, you will probably get a lot more boat than what you imagined you could.
These days $5000 can buy a very reasonable used boat. Excellent value.
Check it out;)

For some reason, OMCs are not favored here (putting it kindly). They changed the spelling for a while - Volvo. I have one and the only part I can't find are the caps for the trim cylinders (not needed yet thank goodness - but soon).
I can come up with scores of whole cylinders, new and used. Every part I've ever bight was on the shelf, unlike my older Merc outboards.

mthieme, please be careful what information you spread. You have a later "Cobra SX" don't you? Well, that is really a Volvo drive with the name Cobra on it. A 1988 Cobra is an OMC drive and a Volvo drive will not fit in its place. It is obsolete and parts are not getting any easier to find.
Crazy Canuck, for $5000 you should be able to buy a 19' bowrider that isn't anywhere close to 20 years old. Just remember, in about 2002 or so, you could buy a brand new Bayliner 175 with a trailer for $10000. Those boats ought to be just about $5000 now a days.
And Summer Fun is right, a well cared for Bayliner is not a bad boat. Problem is, most are not well cared for. And 20 years old is a long time for little things to morph into big things. And one with an OMC outdrive just isn't worth the hassle. Find a used boat with a Mercruiser Alpha/Bravo or Volvo Penta SX drive and you'll be much better off.
