marine equipment meets USCG requirements . the automotive world is not USCG approved. always use the correct parts that are USCG appr. fire is not a boats friend. I'd say Very important !!!

Re: How important is a marine coil

Normally, it is very important to use marine parts - especially ignition and fuel related. But with coils, they are the exception. While I am not familiar with the Volvo set up, I know that most of the Chevy engines run fine (and more importantly SAFELY) with an automotive coil.

I believe in the case of a marine coil the main difference is more longevity than safety. I could be wrong, but I believe most marine coils are epoxy filled, rather than oil filled to take the rigors of the bouncing and vibration better.

Thanks, I don't mind spending the money but trying to fine my problem I just spent $210. on a fuel pump. So I thought I'd try the auto coil at least to see if it works. and as I say $50 is better then 235.

sounds like your stabbing at it trying to find your problems.....
If your going to spend some money.... why don't you spend 70 bucks on a service manual.
Or, wait for Don to jump on and ask him really really nicely if he's got one for your motor.

Almost sure there is a ohm difference between electronic and points coil`s.
Make sure you get the right one or the other ign. components might be affected

I do have the Clymer Volvo penta '94-'2000 shop manual but it doesn't go into depth. I've run ohm tests which show coil ok but my starting problem happens when engine is hot. Seem to be working with auto coil.

If you want a severe duty one. MSD recommends their HVC coil for racing & marine use. "High Vibration Coil" Its epoxy filled.
