how important is a power steering cooler?

Mine is starting to leak. No one seems to make the size i need. It's only about 5 inches long. Can i just get rid of it?

The Mercruiser part number for that cooler is 99356A2 and is still an active number.

Forgot to mention, you really need the cooler. Without it you will have PS problems.
