How important is the choke solenoid?

Hi guys,
Just noticed the engine('82 Johnson 70HP) we have has the choke solenoid but is missing all the associated parts for it(plunger, etc). From what I've read this helps the engine during start up by opening the choke then closing it when you try to start up the engine. We've been getting by without it for awhile now, but wanted to know if this is something we need to get working?

When starting, sometimes it takes 3 cranks, sometimes it fires up on the 1st...thinking that the inconsistency could be tied to this?

Besides starting, does this impact any other part of the engine?

You may want to let us know what size and year it is... it helps.


Its just there to assist you in starting the engine when cold, if its starts all the time easily right now, then you may not see much of an improvement, But many motors can be very difficult to start without the choke or primer working correctly.

Oops, sorry about that! It's a '82 Johnson 70HP outboard...

it aids in starting, by enrichening the fuel/air ratio. can be done by putting a hand over the carbs.
