How is my Sea King cooled?

I have an old Sea King outboard, dark red, I'm guessing under 10 hp., approx. 30-40 yrs.old. Model # 74GG9012 I don't see any impeller in bottom unit, nor do I see cooling fins on the head. If it is water cooled, I may have put gear oil in the wrong places and clogged any water passages. How can I tell how it is cooled? If water cooled, how does water get up to engine?

Re: How is my Sea King cooled?

Hi Thomas<br />You have a 1947-48 5hp SeaKing. These motors were made by OMC's gale div. for sale by Montgomery Ward. This is a twin cylinder water cooled 2 stroke motor. It has a wobbler style water pump empeller. This empeller is driven off the prop shaft. If you remove the prop you should see a cover with some slits in it. this is the pump. This is the same style pump that is used on the Johnson TD20. The problem is, it is a different size. A fuel/oil mix of 24:1 and the point gap is .020.

That's a 47 Sea King (74 backwards) and it is water cooled. The wobbler impeller and pump is behind the prop, under a housing. Go here: www.pfs-ware.com and then to the Oliver outboard page. There's link there for impellers. You can check the water passages by running water up the inlet, sometimes a wire and compressed are useful to dislodge mud dauber nests. If its cooling correctly you should see some water out of the exhaust ports on the leg, and the head/water jackets will be warm, not hot, to the touch. If it gets hot enough to sizzle, shut it down quickly and fix the pump or it'll fry and seize.

Forgot to add: fuel mix is 16:1, uses a Champion J7J plug, points gapped at .020 and plug gapped at .025. A J7J plug is same as J8C in modern equivalents.
