I'm looking at a 20 ft. aluminum deck boat with a 1997 Johnson 150hp FICT Fast Strike. How is this motor for reliability, performance, and gas use. I've heard some very critical things about the FICT but the folks were not very clear why they did not like it.

Thanks, Doug

the performance is superb, the gas usage average , the reliability may but not must be a problem. the 1997 was one of the first FICHTS and they over the time sorted some things out. check if there are any upgrades done on this engine.

When sold, that was the worst outboard OMC ever made. If completely updated and upgraded they can be good engines, but my son in law had to replace his twice before he gave up and went to a carbed engine.

I'm a fan of FICHT motors. Even I would avoid a 97. Once you get to 2000-2001 they are pretty good motors.

My 2004 150 is basically the same as the last FICHT motors. Although it has the benefit of having all the OMC changes and then more changes when Bombardier took over in 2001.
