Re: How is your Mercruiser 470??
I spent less than $100 and about 4 hours. Head on over to breezeworks.net for a good site with all kinds of info on the fix. It is a pretty straight forward deal but read the link I posted before about how to do it. Here are the tools:
1. Harmonic balancer puller - Assorted bolts / washers to fit the harmonic balancer and large bolt to run the balancer back on.
2. Micrometer to measure the camshaft to determine to correct speedie sleeves.
3. Sockets, screwdriver and wrenches
4. Hammer to put the sleeve on.
Parts:
1. Timing chain cover gasket, water pump gasket. I think there are three: Timing chain gasket, water pump cover gasket and hose elbow. These are stacked on one another right on front of the block
2. 2 ea cam shaft seals
3. 2 ea Speedie sleeves
4. Locktite
5. High Temp gasket sealer
The biggest issues are making sure you don't tear the oil pan gasket when removing the timing chain cover. I had lots of room in the bilge so I loosened all the bolts on the oil pan and it gave enough clearance.
The other, is making sure you get the sleeves on the camshaft at the right spots as they are not that wide. I micked the cover and gasket against the seals middle and then micked the camshaft to make sure I got them real center.
If you have mechanical abilities, it isn't hard at all. If you run into issues or want more of an walk through, PM me and I can call you for a full blown explanation.
