Sorry for the n00bish question but I am looking at a bayliner 2855 with a 7.4 EFI motor. The engine has around 400 hours on it. Generally speaking, how long do these motors typically last? I know there are many factors that can drastically effect the life of the engine, but I'm trying to judge how much life it has left. In other words, what is the "mileage" equivalent of this hour amount in car speak. Would it be similar to 50k miles, 100k, 200k etc....?

Thanks for the input

With good maintenance and regular use they can easily run 2000 hours. Use does not usually kill a marine gas engine. They are usually abused and overheat, they rarely wear out.

My old engine (1994, now in a friend's boat) has around 1500 hours on it, and doesn't look like needing any major work any time soon.

"It's not using an engine that kills it. It's not using an engine that kills it."

I'd rather have a well maintained engine with 1000 hours on it than an abused engine with 200 hours.

Ayuh,.... Properly maintained, 2000 hrs. is a well broken in motor,....

4000 hrs. is probably a motor that's gettin' "Tired"....

5000 hrs. is Not unheard of.....

My little 4.3l is nearin' 2000 hrs., 'n is still as solid as the day I built it....

Re: How long will a 7.4 EFI mercruiser last?

From what I see on this and other forums is the engine killer is not properly winterizing it or the manifolds and risers failing. What is the common theme here? Not maintaining it. Very rairley do I see a thread about an engine getting tired and needing to be replaced. I don't know if there is any trouth to it or not but I hear that the engine should last form 1500-2000 hours. If you put on 50 hours a year than thats 30 years, 100 hours a year than 15 years etc. I would not worry about hours too much unless you are looking at resale value. I hesitate to run the engine if I don't have to because I don't want to run up the clock.
