how many alternator poles 1981 johnson 50hp

Is it 12 poles?

Tach setting is the reason I am asking.

According to Teleflex you need 6p setting for 12 poles.

I have seen a few charts that list the less then 70hp being 10 poles like this one:

Then I have seen it listed for 12poles as per the chart you referenced.

The reason for asking is I installed a tach and using the 12p (does not support 10 pole) setting and the rpm seems low 4500rpm. I am way under propped and know it is easily turning over 5k. Awaiting my tiny tach to verify.

yes it is 10 poles..i ran into the same problem....when I bought a replacement tach i was told set to 6 poles....when i took the boat out the RPM's were low....I borrowed A friends Strobe tach....and found I was off by 1200 RPMs ...set it to 5 poles and was right on...
