Re: How many anchors do you carry?

3 or 4 if you count the sandscrew. Bow pulpet anchor with 200' of 1/2" rode, 16' of chain and markers. Two 12 lb Danforths with 100' each of 3/8" rode. 6' chain each. And the sandscrew. I'm a 23' midcabin @ 4500lbs floating in freshwater lakes with anchor depths typically 50'. Sandy bottoms mostly and for rafting off or floating with the breeze I just drop the bow anchor. Overnight stays I drag the other two Danforths out and bury them on the beach (stern to the beach) Sandscrew is helpful for temporary beach stays. I'm lucky to have the storage to pack all that line but not having it is not an option.

I only have one Danforth but I am certainly looking for at least two more.

The lakes I boat at are all soft bottom and I rarely have an issue with rocks.

21 foot cuddy cabin with one 4 pound Danforth type "lunch hook", a 10 pound Danforth type main anchor and if I know I will be picnicing at a beach, a sand screw. A couple of hundred feet of 3/8 3 ply twisted nylon line and if expecting more severe conditions, a couple of hundred feet of 1/2

I have 2 anchors... 1 15# mushroom and 1 15# danforth. I feel this is enough for our rig to anchor out in a heavy wind. Most our lakes are mud bottomed...

Single 20lb Navy anchor. I do not anchor much so it is only used occasionally as I am moving all over when I am fishing.

I have a 12lb front and rear and an extra for those times when that isn't enough, my extra being a brake disc with the fins filled with lead and it s drilledso the hook goes into oneof the old bolt holes so it sits flat on the bottom, it has a ton of holding power.

I have 2. A 13# Danforth main anchor and windlass at the bow, and a 5# stern anchor (seldom used) stored in the cabin. When we stay overnight on the hook, it's always in a raft-up with at least one other boat that also has an anchor out.

2 anchors . . .

13# danforth as the main . . . and 8# danforth as the stern anchor for rafting up, etc.

Two on the 175 Sea Chaser - one danforth (the "original") for the bow and a 15# mushroom for the stern, which can back up the danforth in case of loss.
Two on teh 14' flatbottom - one 20# mushroom for the bow (I fish in swift river current) and a 10# mushroom for the stern, which can back up the 20# in case of loss.

I fish mainly rivers, some with swift moving current.

Then there's a spare 10# mushroom in the boat shed.

I have a mushroom anchor on the bow. I have big chunk of steel that I use on the stern. Old people call it a window weight. It is a thick rod. Storage is very easy with it.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

Great thread. I was just wondering about what to carry.
If I wanted to stay on the water overnight, would two danforths secure my 22ft cuddy? I would use a somewhat sheltered inlet in about 6-10 feet of water. Or should I anchor deeper?

I only carry one normally. I bottoms in the lakes I typically run on are rocky, steep and sometimes really deep (impound lakes). I should carry two, because at some point I'm gonna' have to cut one loose.

We don't overnight at all, so it's not critical usually.

We generally overnight in similar water (semi-sheltered) about 15' deep. You don't need to anchor deeper unless tide swings pose a problem (grounding). Make sure you have some chain, and use adequate scope on the line (a factor of 5-7). If you have plenty of 'swing' room, I would not put out a stern anchor- if the wind shifts you want the boat to shift with it.

BTW, many believe that scope is based simply on the depth of the water you're in. That is not correct. The way to determine the basis for scope is to add the depth of the water to the height of your anchor attachment ABOVE the waterline. For example, if the water is 10' deep and your bow sits 3' above the water, your 'scope factor' is 13', not 10'. A scope of 5X means you'll pay out 65' of anchor rode.

Is a scope of 5x a general rule of thumb when deploying anchor line?
