I am looking at a 2002 boat with a 2002 Suzuli DF70 outboard motor. How can I tell how many hours on the engine ?? Not that I don't believe the seller !! But just checking....... I don't see a read out on the dash gauges. Is it under the motor cover somewhere ??? Does it need to go to a dealer to get plugged into a diagnostic computer ??

Thanks in advance for your answers...........

Some tachs have a built-in hour meter, but yours obviously doesn't. Ask the current owner if he installed an hour meter, if not then your local dealer can hook up their diagnostic cable/software to the engines ECU (engine control unit/computer) and it should show the total hours on the engine. In addition, my last outboard (Evinrude 175hp, 2000 model) had a breakdown similar to outline below:

0-1000 RPMs 2 hours
1000-2000 RPMs 4.5 hours
2000-3000 RPMs 34 hours
3000-4000 RPMs 28 hours
etc., etc.

Basically, a breakdown of how long then engine has spent within a specified RPM range. I do not know if all engine ECUs/diagnostic software can show this detail, but I had this capability with my outboard.

Thanks for the reply. Bought the boat............I am going to have a dealer check it over for me. I guess I will take the previous owners word for now.

turn the key to on.
watch the tach carefully.
when the needle jumps up carefully look at the number it stops at and multiply by 100.
that will indicate hours.

If the gauge flashes and jumps, add 500 hours for each flash plus the needle jump amount. Does that make sense?

OK guys, Today I put the key in and turned it. The lights came on once and went off. Then the tach needle went up to 1200 rpm and back to zero. So tell me how to read this ????

The tach is telling you how many hours, but you need the Service Manual for the translator.

Sorry that you wasted your bux on a SELOC Manual. You need the OEM Service Manual.

If Rodbolt's formula is correct you have 120,000 hours on that engine. I sort of doubt that, but it may well mean 120 hours.

Only the OEM Service Manual will tell you for sure.

Sooooooooooo, If one of you guys has an OEM service manual, would you please check it and let me know ???? Key on, lights come on then turn off. Tach jumps up to 1200 and then back to zero...................

What does it all mean ???? ( JB ? )

I gave mine to the member I sold my DF-70 to, so I can't quote it for you.

Someone may come along who has one and can help you out, but the bottom line is that you need one yourself. I consider the SELOC Manual one step short of useless.

Thanks for the reply JB. I was pretty disappointed in the SELOC manual when I got it. They spend too many pages telling you what size screw drivers and tools you need. They could propably drop 50 pages from that manual easily. But how do you know ??? Oh well, live & learn.

Perhaps someone will still reply ????
