I water tested my 1982 Johnson 90hp outboard V4 (4 cylinders and 2 cycles) with 3 adults on board. I burned about 4 gallons of gas for about 4 miles. A big gas guzzle machine. My boat is a fiber glass 1974 wellcraft 16' long.

Is that excessive or about average?

today's boat ride video will come shortly

That seems a bit excessive. I have a 90 on my 18-foot Starcraft and I probably get around 3mpg at cruising speeds.

The general rule of thumb works out to about a gallon per hour per 10 horsepower at wide open throttle, so your 90 would burn approx. 9 gallons per hour at wide open.
