The wife and I both have permits to carry concealed pistols, and do.

Former military member, legal and responsible gun owner and 2nd Ammendment supporter. If my job didn't keep me near big airports (equals big cities equals, ahem, "enlightenened" voters and socialist laws) I would apply for permit to carry, but here, why bother? Just so Big Brother can put me on his list?

My old man was a gunsmith while I was growing up. I was the only 4th grader that could assemble a .22-.45 conversion. LOL

I do not carry a pistol, I'm at the time in my life where My family as well as my friends all have very young children. When the time is right I will teach them about firearms.

I fully support it, although I dont carry a firearm on me. I spend too much time in airports on business so I'm not sure how they would take to that..permit or not!!!

Nav

No permit here. Don't own any guns, either. Also, I have no gun training, so I feel that's all for the best :) And yeah, I'm for the 2nd, and the rest of the bill of rights, as well.

No. What does this topic have to do with boats anyway?

I am every bit as American and ticked about the recent terrorist activity and crime in general, but you need to face reality. The reality is that most guns do not thwart criminal acts, they enable them. It seems that if a weapon is not being found by a kid or being stolen from the owner, it is being pulled out in a traffic confrontation. I would feel a lot better if the military and police were the ones carrying weapons, not us boatowners.

The "reality" that you quote is CNN/NY Times/Newsweek "reality"--some know it by another name...propaganda. The mainstream media feeds us this garbage and the more naive of us buy it. The ones who do their homework quickly realise the difference. I've been around guns and gun people (police, military, and civilian) all my life...none of them has EVER killed or wounded an innocent, had a weapon stolen or used it illegally. More than one have used their legal weapon to interrupt or deter crime, and the real-life statistics bear this out. You won't hear about it on ABC nightly news, though...just as you won't hear about how most street cops favour allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed. They know that the law-abiding citizen is not the problem. It's the police chiefs, mayors and political animals who oppose these same laws, scared of how they will look in the light of the media coverage...sorry, you're right, this has nothing to do with boats, but this is a subject that elicits strong emotions and I predict we'll have a lively discussion on this one...

Let me get this straight. I am naive because I draw conclusions from CNN,ABC, the NY Times and the rest of the news media. On the other hand, you have "done your homework" by asking your gun toting friends if they have ever had a problem with their weapons. I give the nod to my sources. I am not sure how or why the media would all agree to report only negative stories regarding guns if there were truly as many positive outcomes as you believe. Sounds like a conspiracy theory?

I am sure we will agree to disagree about this topic. I am secure in the fact that I do not own a gun, and I truly wish they were only in the hands of the military and law enforcement.

LOL. It was a question originally asked.
We should not get into a debate, or Admin may delete the whole thing. But it does raise a question for Admin....How about a "Nothin to do with boats" message area???

Conspiracy? Nah, I'm not that paranoid. But I do sense a distinctly "p.c." slant to most news stories...As far as military and police being the only ones armed, that brings up a few more concerns. Probably the biggest is, how do you turn back the clock and get all the bad guys to turn in theirs? Let me know...Most of my "gun-toting friends", as you put it, received their training in the military or police, and have spent a good portion of (or lost) their lives protecting you and your rights. My "homework" has consisted of a lot more than barroom anecdotes. Do some research into Florida (concealed carry legal since 1987). My numbers are a few years out of date, but as of around '97 well over a hundred thousand permits had been issued, less than ten felonies were committed by those permittees (most of which consisted of walking into a bar/airport/government building with a firearm on their person, with no criminal intent), and one homicide...in ten years. Ever read about that in Newsweek? Nah, didn't think so. I'll put my faith in the law-abiding armed citizen.

Does a Wrist-Rocket count as a firearm? At close range, they're almost as deadly...and a lot quieter. Just ask the poor fool who decided he needed to make a half dozen passes on his PWC about 20 feet from my boat house. Stealth baby... He didn't even know what hit him!!! Bwa, ha, ha, ha,...

Walt

I am in the military and an avid gunowner. There are plenty of folks out there that are more than responsible enough to carry outside the military or gov't and plenty within that maybe should not be ( I have denied a few myself).
