I use it on my hull, doesn't seem to have any negatives effecting the gelcoat. Mine stays glossy and clean

I used the oxalic acid stuff from WM. From what I understand toilet bowl cleaner has similar acids/chemicals in it and is cheaper (although for 20 bucks I'll have enough for years).

Worked great, is designed for gelcoat and now my boat isn't brown, it's back to white.

Cheers.

I think the only toilet cleaner that has Oxcalic acid in it is "The Works". Oxalic acid IS what you want - it attacks the organics on the hull which is primarily brown alge. There is also a product called "Slimey Grimey". You can get Oxalic acid at West Marine.
I am not affiliated with any of the above products.

I used a bowl cleaner called Swish a couple of times on the SeaRay I/O we used to have. First, diluted, then full strength. It was incredible. Wipe on, wait fifteen seconds, then hose off. The absolute worst crud and scum just evaporated. The boat was kept in a backwater bay from May to October so the scumline was horrendous.

However, I stopped when I noticed that where the bottom of the transom met the hull the gelcoat was getting pitted - the result looked almost like pumice stone. I can't be sure the two are connected because the boat was getting old and I can't be sure the pitting appeared immediately after I started with the toilet bowl cleaner. It seems like the most likely source, though.

On the Scout I now use the On and Off stuff from marine stores. Sure, it smells just like toilet bowl cleaner and is 12 bucks a bottle (vs 2 bucks) but I admit to being too chicken to use the t-bowl stuff anymore. Although the marine stuff is slower acting, the result is just about as good.

works great, didn't affect my bottom paint or pin stripes. Chnaged the color on my trim tab cylinder and trailer frame--no big deal. Workit from the bottom up so it doesn't leave streaks.
