well every year i read in the spring and see someone that forgot to change there gear oil and they had an water intrusion and it cracked there gearcase.

how many people you think will post here this coming spring about cracked popped gearcases from frozen water next year?

It is pretty silly, that is the easiest thing in the world to do and it is cheap too.

more than i care to even thing about.
you don't have to worry about freezing, but you do have to worry about water intrusion. that is the reason for changing the lower oil, every fall. it is not the cold that cracks them, it is the expansion of water freezing into ice, take cracks them.

so even in the warm climates, change your lower oil, just to check for water.

also always change the washers on drain and vent plugs, they are one time use items. also the #1 place for water intrusion, if reused.

Somewhat along the lines of this...is there any real difference between the washers or the rubber oring for the oil vent and drain? I replaced with the washers (made of what appears to be like a gasket material) as thats what was already on my outdrive, but saw both available when I picked them up.

An o-ring is not meant to be squashed flat, therefore the screw has a recess up under the head, the screw that takes a gasket is just flat under the head. I may be full of crap but I'm thinking you can't put an o-ring on a plug designed for a gasket.
