Hello all, i have a bit a of a touchy subject here as read about winterizing my boat. I have never done this before, but id like to give it a a try for the first time.

I have a Alpha one 3.OL. As far as the winterizing for the cold, id like to drain the water out of the block. Does anyone know how many plugs i should be looking for on this motor?

I run in fresh water, and it will be stored in the garage.

My plan is to take the boat for a nice run and get it warm. then trailer back home 20 minutes away, hook it up to the muffs to get operating temp again.

Drain the block as much as i can, then hook up the muffs again and run -100 pink or blue antifreeze until it pours out of the exhaust.

Then drain the lower unit and refill with fresh gear lube.

Does this make sense?
once again, how many plugs should i be looking for?
Thanks for reading everyone!

Re: How many Plugs?

You dont list a year or serial number but usually there are 2 . 1 in the block, port side and 1 just above it in the bottom of the manifold.go easy on yourself, just remove the big hose from the therm housing and popur it in, remove the small hose going to the maifold and pour it in till it comes out the exaust, remove the drive and your done

You guys make it sound so simple, for first timers like myself, its a bit scary.

Im still a bit unfamiliar with what hoses are what, i might have to take some pictures and post them so you guys can help me out.
I will re post my serial , its a 2002 Alpha one 3.0L.

By the way, i have been paying my Marina to winterize all these years, never removed the drive before, What is the purpose?
Thanks

I'm not that familiar with a 3.0 but my V8 has a drain right in the middle of the block just above the oil pan and one a on the bottom of the exhaust manifold. Then I pull the thermostat housing off and fill the block with anifreeze and then fill all the hoses that go to the housing with antifreeze. You will get antifreeze out of the exhuast and water intake on the outdrive then your good. I know where you're coming from. The first winterization can be a little nerve racking. Check out youtube. There is probably a video on it.

There's a "sticky" by Don S. on winterizing at the top of the latest posts.

Thanks mx fever, Ive checked out several you tube videos and the ones i saw were very straight forward. Muffs attached to a large bucket of anti freeze, fire the engine untill your anti freeze pours out the exhaust!

How many hoses go to the housing, that i will have to fill? and are there any more hoses to fill?

thanks

Re: How many Plugs?

doing it the way you describe will lead to a freeze crack.this link might explain a few things. After you flush and fog the motor,go here
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13A6R2.PDF
The large hose on the left and the small hose on the right.remove the big one and pour the AF in untill it comes out the housing. reconnect hose. remove small hose, pour AF in untill it comes out the exaust, reconnect.

Thanks Doctur,

when you mentioned to pour AF down the large hose on the left until it comes out of the housing, do you mean out of the housing drain plug that i have removed?

Thanks
