I just upgraded from a 1985 50 hp Johnson to 1998
Evinrude 50 SPL. Some say their alternator poles are the same (5). The Faria site says the 1996- on have (6) poles. It's really tuff to set the idle when you don't know how to calibrate the tach. Former John/Rude mechanic in KY says (5).
I have a factory manual and still can't figger it out!

The usual setting would correspond to the pulse output, usually six (6). In which case, the tachometyer would be set to the six (6) pulse setting on the tachometer.

Check the factory manual you have to see what it says about the pulse output pertaining to the stator.
